Rapid Mapping products and data acquisition

Rapid Mapping produces single images and orthophotos of the required quality. Timeframe and weather conditions can additionally influence the quality of the images. The Rapid Mapping products can be viewed freely on at map.geo.admin.ch.

Products

Rapid Mapping offers a range of so called basic products. These include digital image data from various platforms (e.g. satellites, aeroplanes or helicopters) and sensors, chosen according to the nature of the request and equipment availability. The following basic products are defined:

  • Single images (oblique or vertical): quickly available, minimal geolocation.
    Main purpose: general overview
  • Quick Orthophoto: quickly available, compromises in terms of accuracy and aesthetics.
    Main purpose: event management
  • Orthophoto: fully processed orthophoto, time-consuming to produce.
    Main purpose: event documentation

Some or all of the basic products may be requested, as required.

A detailed description of the products can be found in the document "Rapid Mapping products swisstopo" below.

As always with aerial and satellite imagery, there are constraints that make it impossible to guarantee Rapid Mapping products within a specific timeframe. These include weather conditions and the availability of particular equipment at the time of the event. That said, all parties involved make every effort to ensure that the required products are available on time.

Data acquisition

Acquisition of Rapid Mapping products takes place via the Federal Spatial Data Infrastructure (FSDI). The products can be can be viewed freely on map.geo.admin.ch (pre- and post-disaster), making it easy for even inexperienced geodata users to visualise and compare the situation before and after the event.

Post-disaster data can also be easily integrated into geographic information systems (GIS) as a WMS.

In addition, experts in particular can download Rapid Mapping products from data.geo.admin.ch for free (post-disaster only).

Sample data can be found under Further information, "Sample data".
